Is That Song Worth Remembering?

October 5, 2009

Like I promised, another Sir Ken Robinson post.

During his talk, he alluded to the end of a songwriting session between McCartney and Lennon. McCartney was worried they may forgot the song they just wrote (they apparently never left a songwriting session without at least completing one song). Lennon casually responded, “Well if you can’t remember it, who else will?”

Being able to distinguish what’s good and what’s not can be hard, especially if you’re the creator. That being said, becoming self-critical can be good after you’re done with creating your raw song script.

Self-editing is something all songwriters need to do. Something you think is smokin’ right now, may not have any fire when you listen to it next month. Then there are songs you’ll still feel good about months, if not years down the road. The more you write, the more you’ll discover, the more you’ll know yourself, and be able to delete or change the not so good stuff.

So again, your mom was right about the practicing thing.
