The Beauty of the Open Stage

May 20, 2009

So Voyno and I did an impromptu jam at the local open stage last night.

As you can imagine, it was shaky, but we did find pockets of groove throughout.  There’s no real pressure cause it’s an open stage. Anyone can play and try their hand at playing in front of people. It got me thinking of the many benefits an open stage can have for the artist and the local music scene.

  • You get to practice your performance without too much stress. You make a few mistakes. No big deal.
  • You can try out new material to gauge audience reaction.
  • You can hang with local up and coming musicians and build your local network

If you don’t have an open stage in your town, stop complaining and start one yourself. The guy who runs our local open stage has been doing it for over 5 years now. It’s been a big success for the local scene and he makes $1000+/month from it.  It’s an extra revenue source for him and he gets to know all the musicians who play.
