First Impression Evolution

May 19, 2009

Voyno made a good point about first impressions in the last post.  He eluded to it, but the one point I wanted to make clear was that you don’t have to have it all together when you start.

Interpol formed in 98, but didn’t get signed to Matador till 2002.  They didn’t even have a set band name when they started drawing local crowds!  The period before the signing was most likely a period of self-awareness where they didn’t have everything right, but they were learning as they went.

Even though first impressions carry a lot of weight, waiting till everything is perfect to start getting out there and playing may not do you any good.  If the music is there, people will come back to see you play even if you don’t look the part just yet.

So yeah, don’t get hung up on having everything perfect out of the gate, but be self-aware of what you need to work on.

I leave you with an early early U2 demo (1978) when the band were still in their teens.
