Guns N’ Roses Manager Interview

May 7, 2009

Passion plus talent….You can’t go wrong. – Andy Gould

Came across a vid interview with Andy Gould, manager of Guns N’ Roses.

Aside from his firm belief that Chinese Democracy is a piece of art, he stated that talent and passion are the two things he looks for with a new artist. Sounds pretty obvious, but it’s the passion part which I think doesn’t get stressed enough. The guitar god is the guitar god because he put so much time in to master his craft.  There was enough passion to really develop a raw talent.

To me, passion is directly related to work-ethic. If you’re really passionate, you’ll put in the hours practicing, promoting your shows, and building your audience. There are bands who “made it” who weren’t as “talented” as other bands, but because they were so passionate about what they did and what they wanted to do, they rose above.

Passion is what will get you through tough times. Playing shows to 10 people, having your van break down for the 4th time on tour, or having your gear stolen on tour, are all reasons to question whether this life path is worth it. Passionate people will get past that and keep moving forward.

There are a lot of talented people out there, but not as many passionate people. Hopefully you have both.
