SXSW 2009

March 25, 2009

As most of you know SXSW 2009 wrapped last weekend.

For those that went, how did you like it?Did you learn anything? Did you meet someone that may help grow your career?

Typically artists go to these showcases to be discovered or at least meet some important contacts. Industry people go to meet other industry people, check out some exclusive parties and check out the hyped bands. Sure, they may stumble on an act they didn’t plan to go to and be enamored, but I don’t know how often that happens.

Some artists are looking for label deals, still thinking that’s the silver bullet.  You might get a label who’ll get behind you and invest in a couple of albums….if you give up more.  Even though Nielsen claims 1 billion songs were legally downloaded, album sales in general dropped 14% in 2008. Why would a label invest in a new band that hasn’t really proved themselves without getting a piece of publishing, merch, and/or live revenue?  Investing in a band was a risk back in the day, it’s more of a risk now.

That being said, if you’ve already built hype through YouTube, a few great blog reviews, or whatever else,  then people are going to actually want to come check out your showcase.  You’re not just one in a sea of 2000 bands trying to get people’s attention.  You’ve already done a lot of the artist development work yourself. You’ll get industry people knocking at your door and whatever deal you make, you’ll have a strong negotiating hand.

Work to create your own hype and stop waiting to be discovered.

I hear this girl was making some noise at SXSW 2009. Outkast in female format??
