No Such Thing as Music Ubiquity

So I’m thumbing through Motley Crue’s “The Dirt”, thinking to myself, how could people actually like this band. I mean, the songs were ridiculous. This band was more about selling a rockstar/bad boy lifestyle than anything else. Then I thought about the millions of people who bought their records and went to the shows. It can’t just be about image and lifestyle. The songs had to connect with these people too.

Then I thought, why does it matter that I don’t like them. It doesn’t.  They don’t do nothing for me. So what?

Everyone will never like the same thing. It just won’t happen. Even if we only had one way of hearing music, we all wouldn’t what like what came out of it.

Thankfully, we don’t live in a world of scarce choice.

We can find whatever we want, whenever we want on the web.  We can subscribe to content customized to fit our wants and ignore the rest. We can be influenced by our friends and others, but at the end of the day, the choice is ours. Today,  content is created for the narrowest of interests, something hard to keep going in the pre-net days. Since you can now tap into the whole world, that narrow-interest content could have a respectable global audience.

Look at a guy like Andy McKee, an acoustic guitar player who’s got the attention of millions. This guy doesn’t even sing,  he’s just really good (in my opinion). This guy would never ever be played on mtv or commercial radio, yet his sweet sweet skills have been exposed to the world via YouTube and the help of word-of-mouth. Even with the amount of hits he has, there will be plenty of people who won’t care.

That’s ok though. He’s probably built a large, growing community of people who do care.
