Minor Threat: All Ages Scenes

February 27, 2009

As I keep reading more about this new Ticketmaster lawsuit, I started hearing more about Seth Hurwitz and the 9:30 club. This club has history. over 20 years to in fact.  It’s been one of the busiest music venues in America .

Upon digging further, I came across a YouTube video of Minor Threat playing the club back in 1983.  Minor Threat were of one of the more important American punk bands in the 80’s. They were the ones championing the DIY movement and the Straight Edge lifestyle. Most bands were into drugs and booze, but these guys were promoting the exact opposite.

So anyways, as I search for more related videos, I find Ian MacKaye (frontman of Minor Threat and Fugazi and founder of Dischord Records) defending all ages shows at the 9:30 club and the Black Cat (another venue).

It reminded me how important all ages shows are to exposing kids to music. Besides huge concerts, live music was all about being of-age.

Punk was able to grow because if you were 14, you could go see the band live.  You could meet the band. You could even hang out with the band. The band and the fan weren’t really that far apart. They were like friends you hadn’t seen in a long time. In fact, if they acted like rockstars, they’d be thrown out of the place.

Punk thrives on the kids. It’s all about the kids.

Kids are the most passionate about music. I still love music, but I was a lot more fanatical when I was younger.

If you’re a rock/punk/hip-hop act  and you’re not playing all-ages shows, you could be missing out on a lot of potential hardcore fans.

Watch Ian give it to the Judge:

Never been a big Fugazi or Minor Threat fan, but Ian Mackaye is a straight up musician.
