Instant Inspiration

“The only thing I can say is, you gotta know yourself”

-Keith Richards, The Rolling Stone Interviews

I’ve finished reading The Rolling Stone Interviews. Do yourself a favor and go out and get it.

Pete Townshend, Ray Charles, Kurt Cobain, Keith Richards, Joni Mitchell and John Lennon all make appearances and that’s only on the back cover. Inside they have intimate interviews with many of your favourite musicians, composers, producers, and media icons of the last 50 years. There is something for everyone in this book.

I received it as a gift for Christmas and I’ve been reading and re-reading it ever since. The John Lennon interview is particularly interesting. So are the Phil Spector and David Geffen interviews. Geffen was so driven in his wish to be part of the music industry that he lied, claiming he went to UCLA, to get his first job as a mail clerk at a high profile agency. Every day he would search through the mail to see if there was news of his fake degree. In his words “it was the practical thing to do.”

Every interview contains nuggets of gold. I could go through each one, but I’ll at least give you a head start so you can start reading. The book is fun, easy, and provided me with the closest thing to having a real conversation with my heroes. It’s like the best instant oatmeal you’ve ever had…. except for your soul.
