Candid John Mayer Interview

February 20, 2009

So I’m casually YouTubing for some new John Mayer material.

I’ll admit it, I’m a fan. Continuum was gold. I still find myself listening to it on a regular basis. I listen and hear new things all the time. From the tone and feel of Pino’s bass on Vultures to all the background vocals during the climax of Gravity.  You can tell the guy wanted to create something classic. Something that would last.

Anyways, on my hunt for new stuff, I stumbled on an interview with a Berklee student which I thought was worth sharing. It was during the time he spent there doing his Information to Inspiration talk.

This interview was candid and insightful. Whether you like his music or not,  the dude’s got some good things to say regarding building a music career. From promoting himself, learning html, being cool with the shitty gigs, achieving small goals, enjoying each step forward (however small), and more.

Two thoughts worth writing:

1. Don’t try to manipulate your moves to what you think the industry wants. You gotta do your own thing.

2. Everything starts with a good song.

Part 1:

Part 2:

This is going to sound like some sort of parent or teacher, but the guy who interviewed him works with the Berklee student newspaper/magazine, Groove. Due to this, he gets to interview Mayer for the magazine, use the audio interview to promote his own music in the youtube clips above, and tell girls he knows John Mayer.

There’s something to be said about getting involved.

Ya man, John Mayer is a musician first. You don’t see him doing or playing shit that he doesn’t love and enjoy and that’s a rare commodity in today’s musical world.
