Video: Life of Outkast’s Manager

December 18, 2008

Came across a couple vids documenting the ramp-up to Outkast’s “Love Below//Speakerboxx” release a few years back.  You see how hard the manager and the act works to make sure the release hits the record label’s sales goals. You also see the conflict between the manager and the label, even though Outkast was a proven act (aka they’ve sold a lot of records).

The double album went on to sell 11 million units, one of only 3 hip hop albums  certified “Diamond” in the U.S. (over 10 million units sold). It also became the 2nd hip hop album to get the “Album of the Year” Grammy (the other was Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”).

It’s worth noting, all this happened after Napster.

As an indie, you don’t have the pressure of meeting huge first week sales goals. You can build slowly.   That being said, these vids show you the dedication and hard work involved in creating success.
