A Marketing Savvy Flutist??

December 7, 2008

So I was browsing YouTube and came across a video by Greg Patillo, a flutist who’s really taking advantage of YouTube to market his music.

He has a few vids up but there are two videos that are in the millions of views category. They are both covers: The Mario Bros theme song (over 11 million views!!!!) and the Inspector Gadget theme song (over 15 million views!!!!).  That’s insane, but awesome at the same time.

Why so? What makes a flutist deserve that much attention??

1. His top videos are covers of familiar tunes: It’s more likely we check out something we already know. Turns out a lot of people like seeing people cover the Super Mario Bros theme song.

2. He adds a twist. Not only are the songs done on flute, he’s beat-boxing while he plays the flute. I know I’d take a look if someone told me about a beat boxing flutist covering the theme song to Mario Bros. It’s worth spreading the word about.

He has links to to buy his CD and his tour schedule is viewable as well.

I love it: A non-mainstream independent artist using some creativity to market his music and reach a wide audience using the internet.

Great find! This is a good idea for people who do instrumental music. Using familiar themes helps viewers get past the fact that there are no vocals for them to grab on to.

Good call Will, everyone likes the familiar. But I think that his millions of YouTube views are from something entirely different… his magical mustache!
