EMI – a Portal for Morons

October 9, 2008

Wow a major label is looking to the future…. kind of… er not.

EMI, is reportedly planning to launch a new music portal that will sell downloads and offer full-song streams. The site won’t be meant to displace iTunes or MySpace, instead EMI sees it as a way to do free market research into which songs of theirs are selling, and what artists fans are most interested in.

So EMI is making a website that streams content, tracks plays, tracks hits, and they plan on using it as a marketing tool where if I like Coldplay… they would suggest I check out Keane?

Please, open up your eyes.

MUSIC IS BEING TRADED! WHY WOULD WE GO TO AN UNFAMILIAR CORPORATE WEBSITE TO CHECK OUT CONTENT THAT IS ALREADY ON ITUNES AND MYSPACE???

I don’t think the major labels are stupid, I just think that even though EMI’s digital team is led by former Googler Douglas Merrill, they are still trying to use duct tape to patch up holes in the Titanic.

If they let go and embrace the water they’ll realize that it’s not nearly as cold as they thought!

Music like water people. Its a good idea.
