Remember That Folky Cover Version of “Hey Ya??”

October 8, 2008

Obadiah Parker

Awhile back, a friend sent me this YouTube video of this guy (Matt Weddle of Obadiah Parker) covering “Hey Ya” by Outkast. It became viral and everyone was talking about it (over 2 million hits). I thought he was going to be the next big singer-songwriter.

What’s surprising is that he didn’t get offered a deal or get asked to go on tour. Ever after all the attention he got after that song, no real solid opportunities came to him.

Today he’s found a producer in Nashville and has set up a fundraising project (The Elihu Project) where for $10, you get full video access to the recording and production process. You also get exclusive tracks and help him launch his album. All the money raised will be used to cover recording expenses.

He still gets people e-mailing him about the cover and his music. Now he’s tapping into the community he built asking for help recording his new album. I love it!

He’s stopped waiting for things to happen and started taking matters into his own hands.

Good on him for doing this and hope this inspires you to take matters into your own hands.

Watch the video he made to help promote his project:
