Music Marketing: Kanye West vs. 50 Cent

September 30, 2008

Kanye Vs. 50

OK, so the whole Kanye West Vs. 50 cent is a little old, but I wanted talk about it since Kanye is gearing up for his new release in November.

What I want to talk about specifically is how the supposed rivalry was really a partnership and an example of working together to benefit both 50 and Kanye.

1. They both had albums released the same day which was all too convenient.

2. They stunt helped rally the troops. If you were a Kanye fan, you had to buy the album cause you wanted him to beat 50 and vice versa.

3. The stunt was a story the media ate up giving both album releases plenty of publicity

4. The stunt created strong first week sales for both acts in a time where record sales are in constant decline.

Kanye did end up selling more albums, but 50 didn’t do so bad either. I wonder if either would have done as well without working together on this well planned marketing ploy?

As an artist, what I want you to take away is that you can create more opportunity for yourself if you work together with other artists. Share the work, share the rewards, and grow together.

This is good news, But the reality is that these rappers had nothing to do with it’s conception. It was all manufactured by the record company and it’s team of professionals. 50 and west are too busy trying to figure out who’s song they are going to steal next. You give them too much credit. Please, the record companies spill the media with enough lies. Why do you need to further it?

    Hey Tom,

The point is it doesn’t matter who thought of the idea, the point of it was the results. As far as I’m aware, they are on competing record labels. As an indie, you may not get as much media coverage or sell as many records, but you can create positive results on a smaller level and BUILD from there.
