Update: MySpace CEO’s Plan to Save Music

September 21, 2008

I posted this a few days ago, but came across some new information regarding MySpace Music and their supposed plan to save music. I just ran into some more recent news stating they are going to launch with just the Major Labels on board (for now). That’s too bad, but they know it’s the Indies that really made Myspace what it was. Hopefully they will start inking deals with the Indies sooner than later.

You’ve probably heard that MySpace will soon launch their e-commerce app where artists/bands can sell their digital tunes right on their myspace page. What I didn’t know is they are planning to share ad revenue and more with musicians. This could be a good thing…let’s see what pans out.

“To be sure, advertising is just one piece of a larger plan to generate new revenue for artists through MySpace. MySpace Music will also help performers sell downloads, ringtones, concert tickets and merchandise. But advertising will be a “significant” part of the music industry’s future business model, DeWolfe (CEO) predicted.”

Yeah, its about time. This is the kind of thinking that all the major music labels should have been coming up with 10-12 years ago instead of sitting around and doing nothing (aside from the occasional frivolous law suit against 12 year old girls) and getting their clocks cleaned by all the interweb users.

As you mentioned, that truly is a shame they are not sharing some of this revenue directly with the smaller indie bands that myspace what it is.

    Hey Mitch,

I think it will come soon enough. They are the core of what makes myspace still good for music. If they don’t, another 2.0 company will.

    Thanks for the comment.

Myspace Music looks great, however, right now I’m using and it’s AWESOME! A huge catalogue, a great interface, and quite good focuses on emerging artists! Great!

Thanks for the comment. I’m loving that interface too.
